The entire book, The Great Gatsby, although really good and happy at times, has an overwhelming feeling of depression that finds its way into your foreshadowing thoughts. These beaches, though pretty, really are kind of depressing. In the Ansel Adams photo, the boulders really reminded me of the description of West Egg and the two eggs on the beach. These two photos really are about the setting. I can imagine the viewpoint being from Gatsby's house behind the greenery and Nick walking on the beach. The way both of these beaches are subdued really fits the book, since even when there are parties that the whole town attends, there's always this subdued nature that at least one person is holding back what would be excessive sadness if let out in the open.
